Petbarn Pet Insurance Review

About Petbarn Insurance

Petbarn was founded in 1979, with over 140 stores Australia wide.  They are owned by the Greencross Limited, who operates a number of pet related business such as the Greencross Vet clinic which has over 130 clinic's around Australia. Utilizing their large reach of customer's Petbarn started to launch their insurance product with a line up of three plans, saver plus, essential and ultimate cover.

Petbarn's pet insurance plans all over both accidental and injury cover which only a few other pet insurers offer.   Petbarn also has a loyalty program where you could also earn ‘friends for life' points which you could use for discounts after reaching a certain level.

Petbarn occasionally offers promo codes and coupon codes but have an always on 10% discount for multi pets. To find out the latest offers you can visit Petbarn Promo Codes.

Basic: Petbarn Saver Plus Insurance Cover

Petbarn's saver plus includes coverage on both accident and illness.  As it includes illness coverage, to be protected, you will need to purchase the plan when your pet is between 8 weeks to 9 years of age. The maximum annual benefit limit is at $10,000, tick paralysis at $1,000, and emergency boarding at $500.  However, the vet coverage is only at 50% so if a vet bill is $2,100 (including $100 excess), you would only get back $1,000 back.

What's great about the Saver Plus, is there is no upper age limit so even if you pet is 12,13 or 14 years of age, you could still be covered.  This is a huge plus, as most other plans don't offer this sort of coverage for our older pets.

Standard: Petbarn Essential Insurance Cover

Petbarn's Essential Insurance policy, provides a bumper $15,000 annual benefit limit with the % coverage increasing to 80%, making it aligned with most plans.  The plan also includes the option $150 routine cover benefit, increase in tick paralysis cover, but most importantly includes options for dental coverage.  This plan would be considered a comprehensive package due to is flexibility and coverage.

Comprehensive: Petbarn Ultimate Insurance Cover

Petbarn's ultimate plan has an annual benefit of $20,000 with 80% reimbursed on applicable claims.  There is also an increase in coverage for tick paralysis and emergency boarding.  The dental coverage option has also an increased benefit of $750.   This plan is an extension for the essential plan and should provide adequate coverage for the worst of events.   However, due to the high coverage, the premium cost can range from $80 to $120 per month depening on breed.

  • Accidental + Illness coverage on all plans
  • Up to $20,000 in annual benefits for the ultimate cover
  • Option for dental care coverage
  • No age limit on their basic plan so you could cover pets above 9 years old
  • multi pet discount of up to 10%
  • Only 50% of Eligible vet bill reimbursed in the basic plan
  • The average price of plans are higher than other insurers

  • I have been a Petbarn customer for almost 4 years and have purchased most of my dogs food, toys and accessories at our local Box Hill store. 6 months ago, I decided to switch from Petplan’s comprehensive plan, which cost around $90 per month to Petbarn’s Essential Plan costing around the $65 mark.

The main reason for making the switch was the cost and poor service offered by Petplan. I went with Petbarn because their store staff were amazing, i earn double the points so it can be used toward purchasing more food for my dog and they gave me 2 months free off the premium. I thought it was a good deal so for $65 per month, it gives me a peace of mind that if any happens, my dog could still be covered.

  • Hello,

I’ve been on the essential pet barn insurance plan for over a year with my chihuahua. I’ve made a few claims for the routine care, C5 vaccination and heart worm. So far I have not made a major claim but overall the experience I had so far has been great. I have already recommended my friend who seem to have issues with petplan.
