HCF Pet Insurance Review

About HCF Insurance

HCF is a not-for-profit organization founded in 1932.  They have become the third largest health, life, travel and pet insurance company by market share and is the largest not-for-profit organization in Australia.  Being a not-for-profit organisation, the profits stay within the funds to improve their service and improve the payouts to their members.

HCF currently offers three different levels of cover, pet essentials(basic), pet premium(standard) and pet premium + routine (comprehensive) cover.

To be eligible for the plans, they typically require you to purchase the policy when your pet is between 8 weeks until 9 years old.  For accidental cover, there is no upper limit so your pet could be 13 years old and still be eligible for accidental cover.  The excess is flexible, ranging from $0 till $200, with the lower excess attracting a higher premium.

HCF occasionally offers promo codes and coupon codes but have an always on 10% discount for existing HCF members.

HCF Pet Essential (Accident Only) Pet Insurance Cover

The Basic cover only offers Accidental Injury cover and can be bought when your pet is 8 weeks or older with no upper age limit, so you could still possibly qualify even when you pet is 12 years old. The excess ranges from $0 to $200, with the maximum yearly benefit at $8,000.   The basic plan suits healthy young pets with no previous history of health issues.  The plan does not provide cover illness cover or tick paralysis.

HCF Pet Premium (Standard) Insurance Cover

In addition to the basic cover, this plan also includes illness cover and total annual limit raised to $12,000 from $8,000. The extras includes tick paralysis at $1,000, additional emergency cover at $1,000, Cancer treatment, skin condition, infectious disease, hereditary and congenital conditions cover. The standard plan typically suits pets with a history of health issues or certain breeds who are more prone to health issues once they get older.  For example, puppies who have been de-sexed might be more prone to being obesity, pekingese dogs have spinal/back leg problems and more.

HCF Pet Premium + Routine (Comprehensive) Insurance Cover

The Premium and Routine Cover is the highest level cover to provide pet owners a safe of mind.  The routine care benefit valued at $145 is covers $50 which you can use towards De-sexing, Micro chipping , Heart worm, preventative medication, teeth cleaning, council registrations fees, Alternative therapies, prescription diets, declaw removal, cremation or Burial and Dog training.

Other benefits include $30, for vaccinations, $10 heart worm test or blood screen, $10 FeLv/Fiv test or urinalysis and $45 for flea/tick medication.  What's great about this plan is the dental coverage which is rare among other insurers.  The downside is the 2 year waiting period, which might be worth the wait.

  • Competitive Pricing for all plan levels
  • Great coverage including dental cover
  • Positive reviews on external review sites
  • 10% Discount for existing HCF Members
  • No coverage for working dogs
  • Dental Care coverage however a 2 year wait period
